### Summary
**This Term Appointment will initially be for a two-year period, but may be extended for a total of five years. Should the need arise, this position may be made permanent without further competition.
As an employee on a Term Appointment, you will not acquire competitive status and you will not be covered by the agency's Interchange Agreement with the Office of Personnel Management, which allows for noncompetitive transfer from CNCS to other agencies in the competitive service of the federal government. This position is in the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) which is a full-time, team based residential program for men and women ages 18 to 24. The position is located in Vinton, IA. The program is designed to strengthen communities and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service. Corps members are assigned to one of five campuses located in Aurora, CO; Sacramento, CA; Baltimore, MD: Vicksburg, MS; and Vinton, IA. Teams comprised of 8-10 Corps members, complete projects that address essential community needs throughout the US. During the 10-month service term, Corps members receive lodging, transportation, and meals .Upon completion of the program, they are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award which is equal to the maximum Pell Grant. The NCCC has 2 Corps - the Traditional corps and FEMA corps.

### Responsibilities
The Unit Leader is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of assigned Team Leaders (who in turn manage a group of Corps Members) to facilitate the successful completion of multiple service projects. The nature of the work requires Unit Leaders to be on-call, 24/7. Primary duties and responsibilities include:
* Provides leadership to 7 to 10 Team Leaders in the implementation of service projects that are accomplished by approximately 10 Corps Members per team. With a focus on Corps Member development and service learning, logistics, and safety, the Unit Leader will plan, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate the accomplishment of personal and project goals. **Traditional corps** project examples: Disaster support like filling and placing sandbags to mitigate flood impact; educating citizens on sustainability and energy conservation; constructing or repairing hiking trails; assisting veterans, homeless and senior citizens; constructing and rehabilitating low-income housing. **FEMA corps** project examples: Training the public on disaster preparedness; planning evacuation routes and recovery plans; analyzing data; working with nonprofits and government agencies to coordinate services; preparing disaster kits, tracking inventory and loading supplies in warehouses.
* Executes development strategies that will increase retention and result in a continuous learning and developmental experience for Corps Members.
* Guides, advises and evaluates Team Leaders on project execution and Corps Member development and management.
* Works with project sponsors to oversee the quality of the team's work and the achievement of project objectives. Resolves project execution issues that impact project completion and/or team performance.
* Conducts site visits to on-going projects to assess project progress, as well as Corps Member development progress, and to provide assistance.
* Reviews Team Leader reports, project portfolios, and individual team biographical marketing brochures.
* Takes appropriate action in adverse situations involving injury, health or safety of Corps Members and Team Leaders.
* Manages all disciplinary issues that arise on assigned teams.
* Collaborates with other staff members to design training for Corps Members that address team building, interpersonal communication, project and personal safety, conflict management, van driver safety, and group dynamics.

### Qualifications
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to at least the upper range of the NY-02 pay band, which would be at or equivalent to, the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is that which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience **must** include **all**of the following: 1) Experience leading or supervising groups of people to include coaching, mentoring, teambuilding, and conflict resolution; 2) Experience working on structured projects that include time or production schedules and milestones; and 3) Work experience that required conducting training sessions for large groups.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

If you are qualifying based on education alone, you must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or LL.M., if related leading to such a degree. You must submit evidence that any education completed in a foreign institution is equivalent to U.S. educational standards and that you have the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
